Philadelphia, PA − July 3, 2025 − Today, following the narrow and contentious passage of President Trump’s devastating tax and spending bill in the U.S. House of Representatives, State Senator Nikil Saval (D–Philadelphia) issued the following statement:
“Trump’s reconciliation bill is a legislative abomination: a bill that cuts medical coverage and food assistance for millions of Americans while cutting taxes for billionaires.
“As these measures go into effect, hospitals will close, families will go hungry, and people will die. At the same time, his bill simultaneously increases funding for ICE by more than $100 billion, effectively making it a jobs program for fascists.
“This should be clarifying moment for the American people. It is a clarifying moment for me. People who would do this to their neighbors and fellow Americans cannot meaningfully be said to be “public servants.” The divorce between what the American people want, and what their representatives delivered, is total.
“Americans across the country are opposed to this bill, on every count and every measure.
Our office will continue to fight—legislatively, organizationally, in the streets—for a new vision in which all of us have what we need to thrive.”
Representing a massive transfer of wealth from the poorest Americans to the richest, the tax and spending bill is expected to cause 17 million Americans to lose health care, make unprecedented cuts to Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamp) benefits, trigger the closure of nursing homes and rural hospitals across the United States, and exacerbate the costs of housing, health care, and energy—all while ramping up Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda and delivering behemoth tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.
